Sewing and Knitting

Crafts, Gifts and Book Covers with your Sewing Machine

This is a one-day course where you will have the opportunity to make 1 or 2 items from the following: 
•    bunting 
•    spectacle case 
•    tote bag 
•    heart fabric ornaments
•    gift bags
•    apron
•    book cover
•    Christmas stocking or Christmas wreath or tree.

Take home a lovely finished project.  Participants must be able to use a sewing machine. 

Students are expected to bring:
•    Sewing machine (or hire ours - £8), foot control, plug, any feet and accessories
•    Main fabric and trimmings for 2 items with matching thread
•    Instruction manual for machine

Patterns can be borrowed on the day.  A pack will be available to purchase from the tutor for £15.

Bags Galore with your Sewing Machine

This one-day course is an introduction to the art of bag making.  Make a bag (or two) so that you learn the techniques to make most shapes and be as creative as you like with Sue’s help.  

Learn how to:
•    Make pockets
•    Insert magnet fastenings
•    Insert a zip
•    Assemble pieces together.

Take home a lovely finished project.  Participants must be able to use a sewing machine.

Students will have the opportunity to make 1 or 2 items from:
•    Tote bag
•    Wash bag
•    Shoulder bag
•    Beach bag
•    Hand luggage bag
•    Weekend bag.

Students are expected to bring:
•    Sewing machine (or hire ours - £8), foot control, plug, any feet and accessories
•    Main fabric and trimmings for 2 items with matching thread
•    Instruction manual for machine

Learn to Love your Sewing Machines for Beginners Workshop

This is an introduction to using a sewing machine giving participants confidence to use their machines for great things.

Learn how to:
•    Select the various stitches
•    Use the various feet
•    Change the thread
•    Explore the range of stitches
•    De-mystify the controls
•    Have confidence to sew
•    Tend to the tensions
•    Sew in a straight line
•    Turn corners
 

Students are expected to bring:
•    Sewing machine (or use ours for £8 a day), foot control, plug, any feet, accessories 
•    Half a metre of patterned and half a metre of plain cotton fabric – both a width wide
•    Matching threads
•    Instruction Manual for your sewing machine

Take home a lovely finished project.

You DO NOT have to own a machine to attend, but if you are thinking of buying, choose Brother or Janome - we have no problems with these - but make sure the stitch length & width can be altered independently.

Learn to Knit - CANCELLED

Sarah is an artist and knitwear designer.  Her designs have been published by "Knitting" and "Simply Knitting" magazines and her work has been shortlisted for a British Hand Knitting Confederation award. Spend a relaxing morning learning to knit. Sarah will show you all you need to know in order to enjoy this traditional craft.  The workshop will include learning how to cast on and off and the basic stitches that will allow you to begin knitting your own bag.


Patchwork (by machine) for Beginners

This is a one-day introduction to the art of Patchwork and you needn’t buy expensive equipment for it.  Quilt the easy way, using a sewing machine and add backing to your small panel.  

Learn how to:
•    Select suitable fabrics
•    Test your design
•    Cut out accurately 
•    Assemble accurately
•    Apply quilting fabric

Bring along:
•    Basic sewing equipment if you have any
•    25cm x 1 width each of 2 patterned patchwork fabrics.  25cm each of 2 plain contrasting fabrics (or pack available to purchase on the day for £15).
•    Matching threads
•    Sewing machine (or use ours), foot control, plug, any feet, accessories and instruction manual.  

Sewing machines can be hired for £8 per day if required.

Totes Unique – Personalise Your Shopping Bags

Plastic bags are out and eco-friendly bags are in. By the end of this workshop you will go home with two beautifully decorated tote bags that are uniquely yours. The first will be decorated using a no-sew technique. For the second you will learn basic embroidery stitches and how to hand applique. This workshop is suitable for people with no prior sewing experience. An equipment and materials list will be provided or a pack for both projects can be ordered from the tutor in advance of the workshop.
