Amnesty Elective

Amnesty International Youth Group

As part of its commitment to human rights, The Marlborough School is proud to be a member of Amnesty International's Youth Group. Students from years 8 through to year 11 meet Mrs Coy in the Heads of Year Offices on Wednesday afternoons and participation in the group is available as an Elective choice.

The group has carried out several successful campaigns in past years, including protesting against the arms trade and fundraising for Amnesty through a very successful 'splat the teacher' event. Last year, members of the group travelled to London to meet with John Duncan, the British Ambassador to the UN's Conference on Disarmament. See story below.

Campaigns this year will include:

  • raising awareness through Protect the Human week in October
  • campaigning to stop Shell Oil's abuses of human rights in the Niger Delta, and
  • fundraising through the recycling of used mobile phones and ink cartridges.
Please help us by donating as many old mobile phones and used ink cartridges as you can. For every one this will raise £5 or £1 respectively. There is a recycling box in the school office.

Marlborough Amnesty International Group at the Heart of Politics!

On June 22nd 2009 four members of Marlborough School’s
Amnesty International group were invited to the
Foreign and Commonwealth Office by the Foreign
Secretary David Milliband MP
. The invitation was a
response to the petition they gathered in school pressing
for an Arms Trade Treaty.
Cameron Miller, Natasha Hudson and Jamie Wilkins
all Year 8 students accompanied Mrs Coy
to London where Bill Rammell MP, Minister of State
for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs
and the heads
of Oxfam and Amnesty International
were holding a
conference to discuss the issue of the arms trade.
Cameron Miller was chosen from over 100 delegates to
interview a senior diplomat responsible for representing
GB at the United Nations in trying to secure an Arms
Trade Treaty world-wide. What a brilliant day! Cameron
and Mrs Coy also carried out interviews for BBC Radio
Oxford
which were transmitted during the week.
It goes to show that young people do have a voice in
our democratic system and small actions can collectively
put pressure on Governments to make changes to their policies.

Well done to Cameron, Natasha and Jamie and
a big thank you to everyone who signed the petition last
Autumn. Watch the news this year to see when the Arms
Trade Treaty becomes a reality.
