And the winners are:
Ruta Sepetys' refugee story Salt to the Sea, a fictionalised account of the worst maritime disaster in history, takes 80th anniversary Carnegie Medal.
Themes of refugees and displaced children carry on into the Amnesty CILIP Honour category, coincidentally announced at the beginning of Refugee Week. From the CILIP Carnegie Medal shortlist, the Honour went to Zana Fraillon for The Bone Sparrow (Orion Children's Books), the story of a boy living in an immigration detention centre in Australia.
Both books are now available to borrowfrom the Library along with 6 other titles shortlisted for the awards.
Students celebrated with lunch in the Library, choosing their own winning titles while watching the announcement live.
