Exam Success at The Marlborough School

The pupils of The Marlborough School have shown unbelievable commitment and courage in performing to an incredibly high standard in their GCSEs examinations. They have exceeded all our expectations and achieved a fantastic set of results. These pupils deserve every credit for what they have gone through over the past two years of their GCSE courses. We are so proud of the way they persevered, maintained a positive attitude, and dealt with all the challenges the pandemic could throw at them with maturity and determination. To have emerged from this period with such brilliant grades and destinations is a truly remarkable achievement.

These results compare favourably with 2019 which was the last time pupil results were based on examinations that they had taken. These results show that Marlborough is a school where you can fulfil all your ambitions, and that we can compete academically with any school in the country.

Pupils across the board have performed really well in all subjects, and, once again, our most able pupils have excelled. A significant number of pupils achieved all Grades 9-7, whilst an incredible 17 pupils have achieved 4 or more Grade 9s in their subjects.

To those pupils leaving us to begin College places or high-quality Apprenticeships, we wish them every success in their lives after Marlborough. Be proud of what you have achieved and of the people you have become.

We are also celebrating the fantastic achievements of our A Level pupils who have performed incredibly well in their summer exams. The headline data is that 42% of all grades achieved at Marlborough are A* or A, which is in line with the grades achieved in 2020 (40%) and 2021 (46%), when pupils’ grades were determined from teacher assessment. Our A* - B figure is 73%, and A*-C at 91%. These are exceptional results.

This is particularly important, as this group of pupils have had an unprecedented experience in their education over the past two years. These results are even more remarkable when you consider that, for these pupils, these A Level exams were the first set of formal examinations they had taken in secondary school – their first since they took their SATs in Year 6.

Even more important than the grades themselves however, are the destinations that our young people have secured – their next steps into the world beyond school and Marlborough. These are as impressive as their results. The vast majority of students will be heading to their first-choice university, starting their new lives all across Britain, studying topics as diverse as Architecture and Astrophysics, from Law to Mechanical Engineering. Ten of our pupils have secured highly competitive and prestigious Apprenticeships with local, national and international firms. We are also celebrating the fact that four pupils have secured their Oxbridge places: Thomas to Cambridge to study Maths; Elfie to Cambridge to study English; Sophie to Cambridge to study Natural Sciences; and Christopher to Oxford to study Material Science.

There are an incredible 19 pupils who achieved, between them, a total of 63 A/A* grades across all their A Level subjects.

Behind all of our pupils’ grades is an individual young person, and their family, with an individual story to tell. For all our young people, these results and destinations are real and unequivocal achievements that have been earned over the past seven years of hard work, dedication, perseverance and an absolute commitment to be the best they can be. After such a period of turbulence and uncertainty, they have proved that you can do more than survive, you can thrive in the face of challenge and adversity.

On behalf of The Marlborough family, I would like to send the congratulations of everyone to all our young people who have done so well today. You are an inspiration for us all, staff and pupils alike. We are extremely proud of all of you.

*In 2020 the examination season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Exam results were determined by Centre Assessed Grades.

**In 2021, exam results were determined using Teacher Assessed Grades.

As a result of the different methodologies, results in 2020 and 2021 are not directly comparable.
