Governors
Welcome from the Chair of Governors
Stewart Longhurst
I am very pleased to introduce myself as Chair of Governors at The Marlborough C of E School.
I have two children at the school and have been a parent governor since 2022. I saw being a governor as an opportunity to support the school and also to get a better understanding of how it is run.
Becoming Chair in October 2025 seemed the next logical step and in this role I meet regularly with the school’s Principal and with key members of his leadership team.
The governing team at The Marlborough School is made up of a small group of volunteers with a wide range of experience. We meet regularly to help support and challenge the work of the School Leadership Team and are dedicated to achieving the very best outcomes for all students.
The school’s governing body is responsible for:
-
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.
-
Holding the school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school.
-
Overseeing the financial management of the school and making sure money is well spent.
It is a strategic, rather than an operational role: what we do not do is to make decisions on behalf of the school or get involved in planning: this is the job of school leaders. Our role is to challenge and support those school leaders by listening and asking questions and, where relevant, sharing our own perspectives and experiences.
The school’s outcomes and its reputation are strong: it continues to develop and grow. As Chair of Governors, it is rewarding to be in a position to support that continued development, and humbling to be able to work with such a dedicated and positive team.
There is more information about governors on this page of the website. If you would like to know more, please do contact me at chair@themarlboroughschool.org.
The Marlborough School is proud to be part of the River Learning Trust (RLT). Information about how governance works in RLT is available here
