Transition to Year 7

Open Evening 2021

Thank you to all our families who attended Open Evening last week. We had literally hundreds of visitors and it was fantastic to see so many smiling faces and the school so full of life and energy.

Thank you also for all your positive feedback. We hope you are able to visit us on our Open Mornings as well.

If you missed it on Thursday evening, here are two short video clips for you to watch. One is the speech recorded by Mr. Hanlon, Principal. The other is a short film of our pupils explaining what they love about Marlborough and what advice they would give to a Year 6 pupil. We hope you enjoy them.

20th September 2021

Dear Parents and Carers of prospective Year 7 pupils 2022,

I would like to formally welcome you to attend our programme of Open Events that are scheduled to take place later this week. They begin with our Open Evening which is taking place on Thursday 23rd September from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Due to the current context and our desire to make the experience as safe, enjoyable and informative as possible, we have made some adjustments to our usual Open Evening arrangements.

We have decided not to have a pre-booking system to allow as many families as would like to visit the school to be able to do so. We aim to have enough staff and pupil stewards and tour guides, as well as mitigating systems and protocols in place to allow safe and controlled movement around the whole school site.

This year we are particularly excited about our Open Evening. You may be aware that the current Year 6 cohort is an unusual group across our traditional feeder schools, in that it represents what is known as ‘bulge’ year. This means that there are significantly more pupils in this year than in any over the past few years.

To help accommodate this, and to maximise the opportunity for as many pupils as possible within our community to access a place at Marlborough should they choose it, we have agreed to increase our intake for the academic year 2022-23 by 30 pupils. This means that we have 210 places available this year, rather than 180.

We have agreed this with the Admissions Team at OCC as well as with the River Learning Trust. This is not a permanent change to our Planned Admission Number (PAN) and we will review the situation on an on-going, annual basis. We have been oversubscribed for a number of years now, and are exploring further options that will help local pupils from our community who wish to come to Marlborough, to be able to secure a place here.

In order for our staff, existing pupils and visitors to feel as safe as possible, we will be putting in place the following measures for our Open Evening:

• Open Evening starts at 5.30pm. I would ask all families to arrive for this time, rather than to come early. This will help us to manage arrivals safely. Tours will be available all evening until 7.30pm.

• All families will be allocated a tour guide to tour the school site. Tour guides will be either a member of staff or a pupil representative. Tours will leave from the Marlborough Enterprise Centre (MEC) and be available immediately upon arrival.

• We will not be gathering as one large group in the MEC for formal speeches. The Principal, Mr Hanlon, and other key members of staff will be available to talk with you at the end of your tour. Speeches by the Principal and pupils will be prerecorded and available on the school website, as well as shown in designated classrooms during the evening itself.

• All staff in school are self-testing regularly at home. We would strongly urge all adult visitors hoping to attend our Open Evening to self-test before they enter the school site.

• Face masks or facial coverings are also encouraged, particularly if some areas become temporarily congested. However, there is no obligation whatsoever for anyone who feels uncomfortable doing so.

• The tour will visit a larger area of school than in previous years to allow the route around school to be one-way and will take place outdoors as much as it possibly can. Rest assured our tour guides will make sure you are on the right track throughout your visit!

• Hand sanitiser will be available for all visitors’ use as they enter each new space or classroom.

• Tour groups will be restricted to either one- or two-family groups only.

• All areas of school and classrooms will be well-ventilated.

• We will have stewards situated around all around the school site to ensure there is no build-up of crowds and to answer any questions you may have.

I hope that I have reassured you that you can visit The Marlborough School safely. We look forward to welcoming you to our school on Thursday 23rd September.

Yours faithfully,

Mr A Hanlon Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Prospective Parents’ Open Evening and Mornings – September 2022 Intake

We would like to invite you to The Marlborough C of E School Opening Evening for prospective parents for Admissions in September 2022. The event is taking place on Thursday 23rd September, starting at 5.30pm.

Our Open Evening is an opportunity to tour the site, meet with teachers and to see the exciting work that goes on in our school.

Marlborough School pupils will also be present to share their experiences of school. Mr Hanlon (Principal), Ms Bromley (Assistant Headteacher) and Mrs McCleary (Transition Lead and SENCo) will also be present to answer any questions you may have.

Year 6 pupils will also be especially welcome with their parents and carers to one of our two Open Mornings, on Tuesday 28th and Thursday 30th September, between 9am and 10.30am. During these sessions, you and your child will have the opportunity to see the school in action on a normal day and observe pupils in their lessons.

The past eighteen months have been incredibly challenging for everyone in so many ways. Here at Marlborough, we have coped brilliantly with the various demands posed by the pandemic. We are really excited to be welcoming visitors back to our school, but will do all we can to make sure these events are managed in a safe, organised and well-considered way.

To this end, we will be making some adjustments to our usual Open Evening format. This means that we will not be having any formal speeches or presentations and will be retaining some of our covid secure protocols. For more information, please see the guidance on the school website over the coming days.

If you are unable to manage any of these dates but still wish to visit us, please contact Mrs McCleary at The Marlborough School to arrange an alternative time. You can email her directly on:

We look forward to welcoming you to Marlborough.

Yours faithfully, Mr A Hanlon Mrs A McCleary Principal Transition Lead and SENCo

12th July 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

Our Virtual Parents’ Event is now available on our website. You will be able to access a video from Mr Hanlon, the Headteacher. In addition, there is a presentation from myself which answers the questions which have been submitted by families of our new Year 7s. This presentation covers some of the practical aspects about starting at The Marlborough C of E School. For example, I explain that information about form tutors will be disseminated next week.

Whilst we are still awaiting guidelines from the DFE regarding COVID-safe regulations, we are planning for students not to be in ‘bubbles’ next year. However, we are prepared to adapt this if we need to. I explain more about the practicalities of this in the presentation.

As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me:

Yours faithfully

Welcome to Parents and Carers

Presentation for Parents and Carers

 6th July 2021

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 6,

As we come closer to the summer holidays, I know that your children will be becoming increasingly excited about starting with us at The Marlborough School in September. We are really looking forward to meeting them too!

Unfortunately, we are not going to be able to run our final face-to-face Induction Day on the 13th July, as a result of the rising Covid cases in Oxfordshire schools. I have been working with each of the primary schools over the last weeks to try to plan separate visits, but I am afraid this is no longer deemed safe or practical.

Please be reassured that our staggered start in September will enable us to complete our comprehensive induction programme, so that all students feel comfortable and confident in their new school.

We will be releasing useful information for you in our Virtual Parents Event next Monday, 12th July. This will be published on our website and will remain there for you to access at your convenience. This includes the answers to your questions. It is not too late to submit a question via our Google Form which can be found here. During the week beginning the 12th July we will also be in contact with you to inform you of the Form Group for your child, and they will be introduced to their new form tutor through a video.

We are continuing to plan and prepare for our Summer School in the week beginning the 23rd August. Thank you for responding via our Google Form to express your interest in this event. As I write to you, the Covid regulations for later in the summer are unclear, and these may potentially impact the event. We will be emailing with more details about Summer School over the next couple of weeks.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries at all. My direct email is

Yours faithfully,

15th June 2021

Dear Parents, Carers and Year 6 Teachers,

Today we are launching our second Marlborough C of E School Virtual Transition Event. This is designed to give students an experience of day-to-day life in Year 7. However, instead of just the five lessons that students would usually have in one day, we have provided lessons from a whole range of subjects for students to sample.

The lessons will remain open on our website, so they can be accessed at your convenience, and over any period of time. For example, some primary schools may choose to look at them in class this week, but I know that Parents and Carers may be interested to sample the lessons too! There is no expectation for students to complete all the lessons, nor to submit any work; we encourage you all to have fun with the taster sessions.

The Virtual Transition Event is set out below in the table with links to the sessions. This provides a suggested structure to the sessions, like a timetable. This begins with an assembly from Mr Hanlon, the Headteacher and Ms Bromley, the Assistant Headteacher with responsibility for the transition process. Most lessons require students to have writing or drawing materials at the ready, you also will see a second link in the table if there are other resources provided.

We have had a lot of fun making these sessions, we hope the students (and adults) enjoy the learning too! As always, we are just an email away – Ms Elli Bromley, if you have any questions at all.

18th May 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

I write to you with further information for your child’s transition to The Marlborough School. It is exciting to think that in just a few short months our new Year 7s will be starting their Marlborough journey. We are committed to ensuring that the transition process runs smoothly, and that every child and family feels well supported.

The next stage in the transition process are our first virtual induction materials. These are attached to this email and are available on our website. These will remain available until September, so you can access them at your convenience.

All the information about your child’s transition, as well as all the induction materials can be found under the ‘Transition to Year 7’ section of the website, which can be accessed here. You will be able to see our Welcome Video, which will familiarise you with the school. It introduces you and your child to key members of staff, provides a virtual tour of important areas of the school and reveals current students’ advice for our new students.

In addition, there is an Activity Booklet for your child to look at and complete if they wish. This is provided in both Word and PDF format for ease of access. This contains tasks which help preparation for secondary school. There are also some creative tasks which include the opportunity to write personally to Mr Hanlon; we are really looking forward to learning more about the students through these activities.

There is also our Guide for Parents and Carers. This is available as a video, but also as a pdf so that you can search the information for the details you need. Whilst we have put together a comprehensive guide, we know that you may still have questions.

To this end, I invite you to send a query using the Google Form that can be found here. The questions will be collated and will form an integral part of our virtual Parents’ Information Event, which will be published on the website on the 12th July. This information will be in lieu of the Parents’ Information Evening that was originally planned for this date. However, if you have any questions in the short term, do please contact me:

Finally, I’d like to confirm the timeline of your child’s transition process to The Marlborough School:

18th May: Induction Day 1 – virtual resources including the Activity Booklet;

15th June: Induction Day 2 – virtual resources including sample lessons to try;

12th July: Parents’ Information Event – virtual materials including responses to your questions;

13th July: Induction Day 3 – students attend The Marlborough School 9.15a.m. – 2.15 p.m.

We will write to you with further details about all of the above over the next few weeks.

Yours faithfully,

Ms Elli Bromley

29 April 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are now entering the next stage in your child’s transition to The Marlborough C of E School.

I am currently learning about all the individual students by speaking with the Year 6 teachers. A very enjoyable task! Whilst I am looking forward to meeting all our new students face-to-face, this isn’t possible yet. As a consequence of Covid restrictions, the induction days planned for the 18th May and 15th June will be virtual, and the resources will be accessible from primary schools or from home, at any time. Therefore, your child should attend their primary school as normal on these dates. There will be more information about the induction days sent to you soon.

You will now have received by email a pack of documents to be read and completed. The documents contain lots of important information, including regarding uniform. You can complete these online and return them to our Transition Administrator, Mrs Brinkworth. If this is not possible and you require a paper copy of the pack to be sent to you through the post, please contact Mrs Brinkworth:

If you have any further queries or questions relating to transition, please do not hesitate to contact me at school via my email:

Yours faithfully

Assistant Headteacher: Culture and Ethos

30th March 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

I am delighted to welcome you to The Marlborough C of E School community. As your child will be joining our Year 7 cohort in September you are now part of the Marlborough family. Here at The Marlborough C of E School, your school, we take great pride in our school vision and living our values in our everyday thoughts, actions and behaviour.

The end of primary school and the beginning of secondary school is an extremely important time for your child, for you and for us. We are committed to ensuring that the transition process runs smoothly, and that every child and family is supported during this time.

We are fortunate at Marlborough in having an Induction Team of many years’ experience. Overseeing Key Stage 3 is our Assistant Headteacher, Ms Bromley, whilst in charge of the Transition process is Mrs McCleary. Mrs McCleary and Ms Bromley have already begun to meet with many of our year 6 teachers and SENCos to ensure a thorough handover. Below they have detailed some key information for you.

“Dear Parents, Carers and Year 7 pupils,

We are delighted in welcoming you and your child to The Marlborough School class of 2021! We are really looking forward to getting to know your child during the forthcoming transition process. We are extremely proud of our culture here at Marlborough and we know that all the older students and the staff are looking forward to welcoming our new cohort to this caring environment, where we live our values of respect, ambition, equality, perseverance, honesty and community. In the meantime, we look forward to learning more about you from your year 6 teachers and, after Easter, your parent/pupil contribution form.

Induction Days

This year we will be devising a bespoke Induction Programme because of the current Covid limitations. This will mean that our initial inductions will be conducted virtually, with opportunities to learn about Marlborough and ask questions. However, we are waiting to see how the situation develops over the coming months and will therefore be able to inform you later in the year as to the final details for the later sessions. Through the important transition process, we hope your child will discover that The Marlborough School is a place where they will flourish. Our key objective is to help in making the move from primary to secondary school as smooth and as anxiety-free as possible.

The induction days are currently planned for:

Tuesday 18th May

Tuesday 15th June

Tuesday 13th July

There will also be an information evening for parents and carers on Monday 12th July.

In addition, next month you will receive a welcome pack containing important documents and forms to complete and return to us. This includes the Parent/Pupil Information Sheet. This is an important way of communicating more about your child, and this will help us in creating Tutor Groups. Our

priority is to create Tutor Groups which comprise a rich mix of backgrounds, interests and abilities, to enable the individual and the group to thrive, both academically and personally.

Mrs McCleary will return from maternity leave in September, in the meantime, I will be responsible for the safe and happy transfer of all pupils from their primary school into our Marlborough family, and look forward to ‘meeting’ your child soon.

Ms E. Bromley

Assistant Headteacher: Culture and Ethos

We will be in touch soon with more information regarding Induction Days. Our school was significantly over-subscribed again this year so we are delighted that you have been able to secure a place. I cannot wait to meet you all and we can celebrate you all being part of our special school.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries about induction or starting at Marlborough, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Bromley at:

Yours faithfully,

Mr. A. Hanlon
