GCSE Grading process 2021:

Further information on Centre Moderated Grades

Dear Parents and Carers,

Please find attached to this email further information about the nature of the ‘specified evidence base’ that we will use to determine the Centre Moderated Grades (CMGs) this year. The details of the evidence base, as well as the content and timings of our Internal Standardised Assessments (ISAs) can be found there for each individual subject. Our approach remains ‘assessment with a safety-net.’

We will share with you the timetable for the ISAs on our return after the Easter break.

We are also re-issuing the December Progress Review for your child, to serve as a reminder of our professional predictions after the last set of summative assessments in November 2020. You will have had recent conversations and subject specific advice about your child’s progress at Parents’ Evening in February. There is still time to improve these grades by following this guidance and the revision programme.

Each subject has set structured revision tasks for students to work on over the Easter holidays. This work will focus on the content that will be assessed in the ISAs which has been reduced in all subjects.

We are extremely pleased with the way that students have returned to school after remote learning. We hope that, as well as revising for their ISAs, they will all plan in some time to relax and unwind after an intense and busy term with lots of information to take on board.

Following the end date of May 28th, we are preparing a programme of Sixth Form Induction, A Level bridging work and careers support. We will write to you with the details of this after Easter. Some information about how to apply for the National Citizenship Scheme (NCS) will follow in the next couple of days. This is an exciting opportunity for students to get involved in over the summer holidays.

As ever, if you have any questions or concerns about this, please don’t hesitate to email me directly: .

Yours faithfully,

Emily Harris

Year 11 Revision Presentation

Dear Parents and Carers,

Further to the information about Centre Moderated Grades last week, please find a short presentation on Revision for Year 11 students here. This is also on the website.

Students will watch this with their tutors and be supported with revision planning in school. They will receive clear instructions on a structured revision programme for all their subjects over the Easter holidays.

A concise guide to revision in each subject is attached to this email and also on the website.

Next week, we will send you the Specified Evidence Base for each subject and the content of each subject’s Internal Standardised Assessments (ISAs) as well as a reminder of your child’s most recent Estimated Final GCSE grade.

In the meantime, please do feel free to contact me directly with any queries at

Yours faithfully,

Emily Harris

GCSE and A Level grading 2021

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 11 and Year 13,

I am writing with details of The Marlborough School’s process for awarding GCSE and A Level grades this year. You will find a full explanation of the process in this video that is also on our website. The scheduled Revision Presentation for Year 11 families will now happen next week.

As you know, external GCSEs and A Level exams have been cancelled this year. The DfE published a ‘Decisions’ document following their consultation into this issue. You can read the full version here.

Here at school, we have taken the time to consider the best approaches to the task that we have been set by the government. We have consulted with colleagues in school, in our partner schools within the River Learning Trust, and with other schools around Oxfordshire and beyond.

We have devised a process that is fair, robust and equitable for all our students. It will allow our students to be assessed on what they have been taught over the two years of their courses and to demonstrate what standard they have reached over that time. It will also allow us, as professionals, to use the ‘safety net’ of a broad range of evidence when determining each individual student’s grades.

Please watch the presentation with your sons and daughters so that you are clear about the process at this stage. Subject specific details will follow as we establish the evidence base that we will use to determine the grades.

We hope the process, and the thinking behind it, is clear. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me directly at school if you have any questions or queries arising from the presentation. My email is

Yours faithfully,
